Calamari Oil And Manic Depression

Some doctors are introducing omega-3 fatty acids in conjunction with the traditional medicines that are prescribed to patients. Based on  studies and different research, omega-3 fatty acids specifically calamari or squid oil can help in improving the mental condition of patients suffering from clinical depression, bipolar disorders, ADHD and other mental issues. Omega-3 plays an important part in normal brain function  and in maintaining the health of  the nervous system. It was shown that calamari oil has high concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are linked with preventing and minimizing the effects and symptoms of any type of depression.

Experts have stated the limited but landmark study on how omega-3 can affect the brain. They have found out that omega-3 administered to patients showed remarkable improvements over a 16-week period. Calamari oil was able to block the abnormal signals which the experts think is present in depression and mania as stated by Andrew Stoll, the lead researcher and the director of the pharmacology research in in McLeans’ Hospital in Harvard University. The researchers believe that omega-3 boosted the levels of  the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. The lead researchers said that research animals showed the omega-3 fatty acid helps in replenishing the lipid bi-layer the surrounds the body’s cells and brain cells.

Omega-3 rich calamari oil is not touted to replace traditional manic depression medicines but it can enhance its effects in minimizing the symptoms of mania and depression. Experts state that going for the natural sources of omega-3 is the best because of the additional nutrients and minerals. Enhancing the patient’s diet with omega-3 rich sources like squid is not a bad idea at all but if the patient prefers supplements, as the doctor about it.
